The End of CFDJ... and a Major Announcement on the Horizon

As many of you have already heard, Sys-Con is discontinuing CFDJ. I was just as surprised as many of you. I'll take this opportunity to publicly state that my control over the technical content of the magazine was relinquished about a year ago because Sys-Con wanted to assume responsibility/control over author/article solicitation and pretty much all decisions regarding the magazine. My role as Editor-in-Chief went from overseeing nearly every technical aspect of the magazine to simply writing an editorial every month. No surprise that from that point to present, many CFDJ readers noticed a decline in quality. It was at this time that several popular CF bloggers publicly vocalized their disapproval at Sys-Con's reprinting of blog entries without permission.

I am sad to see CFDJ go, as it was once a great magazine. That said, I was no longer happy with the way the magazine was being run and had planned to resign as Editor-in-Chief immediately following MAX. The fact that as Editor-in-Chief I knew nothing of the decision to discontinue the magazine says it all.

Two things I also want to state for the record:
  1. I was disgusted by the statements about ColdFusion made by Sys-Con in their press release(http://ajax.sys-con.com/read/426141.htm)
  2. Not now, nor ever, have I been responsible for or had any say in the Sys-Con website (yes, I hate it too and have for quite some time)

I will continue to write and offer commentary and insight regarding ColdFusion and the CF community via this blog. Posting has been light of late... I've been very busy and have some major news, which I will most likely be announcing tomorrow.

Comments
I had a feeling that you had to relinquish control. It had become pretty clear that either you weren't paying as much attention to CFDJ, and knowing you, I knew that was probably not the case, or that they had demoted you to a figure head. I had noticed one of the last CFDJ issues didn't even have an article from you in it.

I look forward to whatever it is you have to announce... and please remind me to buy you that beer I've owed you for a few years now when we see each other at MAX! :-)

I hate to see it go to as I used to enjoy reading it. However, I always thought Sys-Con's subscription rate was WAY too high for a 12 issue magazine. At least now I don't have any reason to go to their site and put up with that auto-play video clip they plop on every one of their pages.

"CFDJ was launched 10 years ago as a custom developer magazine with the direct support of Allaire Corporation. This support continued after the acquisition of Allaire by Macromedia. After ColdFusion became part of the Adobe product line Adobe recently decided to discontinue its support of the magazine."

Is that the real reason why they are shutting it down? It sounds like "no CF support from Adobe? [sys-con gets upset] CANCEL CFDJ!" :-)

I look forward to hearing your announcement.
