Studio 8 is Here!

On 8/8 at 8 AM, Macromedia Studio 8 was released. That's a lot of 8's. Anyway, Studio 8 has a lot of good stuff - I like this release much more than the other releases. Better products, better pricing. You can also now upgrade from any prior version of Studio, which I think is very cool. There are a lot of cool features in the new versions - DW has better XML support, Flash Lite emulator's in there, and Flash 8 has a lot of nifty stuff in it as well. It has only been announced, it isn't available yet, there's another month+ to go for that.

True - it will be shipping shortly. I've been playing with it though, and it's pretty slick.

I'll be curious to see how the Studio sales go. I certainly see Dreamweaver and Flash selling quite well, but this is where the Adobe acquisition is a bit of a black cloud over pending sales. While nobody knows for sure yet, I don't think it's stretch to say that Fireworks and Freehand are prime candidates for discontinuation. Why spend the money? Granted, the upgrade cost is quite attractively priced, but it still seems ill-advised to invest in a product with a shaky roadmap.

Actually, I think this version of Studio is going to do really well. For one thing - FreeHand isn't in it! Instead, you get Contribute and FlashPaper!!! Fireworks is still in it, and it's got some good new stuff. Obviously, Dreamweaver and (especially) Flash are going to be the big selling points. Studoi now comes with Flash Pro by default - Flash Basic is only available as a seperate purchase. I think this is also a good thing. The ability to upgrade from any prior version is sweet, and the pricing for upgrades is really good now. I'm fairly confident that people are going to want to upgrade to this new version.
